Description

Physics of Shock and Impact deals with the shock physics of solids with emphasis on impact applications that are brought about intense energy stimulations. Comprising of two volumes, this work covers physical, material, mechanical and thermodynamic fundamentals of shock physics. The various chapters also include a range of analytic solutions that address topics in the many applications involving shock physics. Volume 2, Materials and shock response, addresses equation of state in the shockwave and the response to shock of various material classes.

This set of two books deals with the shock physics of solids, with an emphasis on impact applications that are brought about by any of a variety of intense energy stimulations. A number of topics in shock physics are addressed in some depth. This book does not come close to exhausting the topic of shock physics, however. Rather, emphasis falls heavily on a selection of topics that have been the focus of my attention over the past several decades. The book covers the physical, material, mechanical and thermodynamic fundamentals of shock physics where appropriate.
Also addressed are current research topics in shock physics, a number of which have yet to achieve a mature status of understanding. The various chapters also include a range of analytic solutions that address topics in the many applications involving shock physics. The solutions are tutorial in nature but are, in many cases, useful complements to comparable computational solutions, in that the underlying shock physics is usually more clearly revealed. In a number of cases unique shock wave and impact data are used to supplement the presented topic. The source of these data spans the three to four decades over which substantial strides in the development of shock wave instrumentation have been made. The shock data presented re
flect such advances. At this stage the book is a work in progress. The wonders of present day computer word processing allow, with some effort, completion of the text at intermediate points along the journey. My intent is to eventually supplement current chapters with further topics that have as yet to be prepared, and to add several further chapters. At periodic later stages the plan is to update the book when sufficient further progress has been made. Should personal energy and motivation stall along the path, the present organization will leave some product of the efforts expended
